Creating Monarch Butterfly Gardens for the Community

At the Legion of Bloom, we are on a mission to help save the Monarch Butterfly!

We’ve partnered with our good friends at the California Association of Conservation Resource Districts (CARCD) to create and restore local Monarch Butterfly habitats, and we’re helping them out by donating profits from our Monarch Vape Cartridge sales to the organization. That means that when you buy Legion of Bloom vape products, you’re not only supporting a sustainable cannabis company, but also supporting CARCD’s important mission of saving the Monarch Butterfly.

Last week, LEGION sponsored a Plant Drive held by the Goldridge and Sonoma County Resource Conservation Districts (RCD’s). Our vision was to inspire local residents to plant native milkweed and nectar plants in their home gardens while connecting them with a community of like-minded environmentalists. The Plant Drive empowered our neighbors to go home and carve out pockets of pollinator habitat all over the county using the signature curated plant kits.

The Plant Kits contained two milkweed plants, three nectar plants and educational material that detailed which plant species are suitable and provided individuals with high-level information about the Monarch Butterfly's life cycle.

Providing plant kits for residents was important to the LEGION because we want to take the guesswork out of the process and enable the community to plant suitable species with great ease. The milkweed provides a habitat for Monarchs to lay eggs upon and doubles as a food source for caterpillars after they hatch, while the nectar plants provide essential nourishment for the young butterflies after they emerge from their cocoons. The accompanying educational materials and plant lists allow individuals to replicate the process if they want to do more planting on their own.

The Plant Drive was a huge success, and as the first of its kind in Sonoma County, it served as a successful pilot program for similar environmental celebrations in the future.

Want to create a monarch habitat at home, too?

Don’t worry—even if you missed the LEGION Sponsored RCD Plant Drive, you can still protect the Monarch Butterfly and create a suitable habitat for their survival by checking out our free Monarch Mini-Guides, which includes a list of the best species to plant for butterflies in California.
